The 2013 6-4-3 DP Cougars (9U) opened their season in March with a solid performance of fundamental baseball to capture the Gold Bracket Championship of the Triple Crown - Forsyth County Slugfest. The Cougars (9U) were led by strong offensive numbers - averaging .519 as a team for the weekend and scoring 60 total runs in five games. The Cougars also had 106 team at bats with 55 hits (including one triple and six doubles). The Cougars gathered 46 team stolen bases, 16 walks and only 12 strikeouts. The Cougars also benefited from solid team pitching performances that allowed only 12 walks while striking out 23 and allowed only 12 runs off of 17 hits.
The highlight of the weekend came as the Cougars faced the Acworth Warriors in the first game of bracket play on Sunday. Acworth owns the series between the Cougars and it is always great baseball whenever these two foes match up. Indeed, Sunday's game was more, great baseball. The Cougars jumped out early and led for several innings, but the Warriors mounted a rally to come within two runs of the lead. The Warrior rally was stopped on a phenomenal catch by center fielder, Drew Bray, who snagged a frozen rope, line drive off the bat of the Warriors clean-up hitter with the bases loaded (and for the 3rd out of the inning) and extinguished the Warriors hopes to mount a comeback.
Congratulations to the entire Cougars (9U) team for their early tournament success and positive performance.
